Job Description

DESIGN DRAUGHTSMAN

A mining manufacturing company situated in the Springs area, on the East Rand, is looking for a design draughtsman to join their growing and successful team.

Qualifications

  • Matric Pass with Maths & Physical Science
  • Trade in a mechanical field (Fitter & Turner, Machinist, Tool Jig and Die Maker etc.) or National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or N6 in Mechanical Engineering
  • A Mechanical Draughting certificate, or design draughting certificate for Engineering Draughting would be an advantage.

Computer Literacy – Minimum Requirements

  • The successful candidates must be a Self-starter, diligent, organised and tenacious. He/ She must have good time management skills and must pay attention to detail. He / She must be able to portray professional ethics and be tenacious.

Skills Required

  • Dimensioning and Tolerances – able to reference the correct tolerances required for different material processing processes (both inside and outside tolerances for mating parts)
    • Laser cutting
    • Bending
    • Machining (turning, milling etc)
    • Grinding
    • Tapping
  • Good knowledge of best practices – for example using radii to reduce stress concentration in parts, rounded edges for neat safe finishes, chamfers and leads for easy of fitment, ergonomics and safety
  • Good, practical knowledge of effective guarding design (neat, simple, fit for purpose)
  • Good knowledge and understanding of hydraulic seals – how they function, how to specify them correctly for the intended function;
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the different types of bearings for various applications and a sound knowledge of how to incorporate these into equipment design;
  • Sound knowledge of fastener types, applications and torque requirements etc.
  • Able to design pins, bushes, clevises etc.
  • Able to do cylinder design (single acting, double acting, telescopic etc.)
  • Ability to work unsupervised, under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Ability to work accurately under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Good understanding of hydraulics and the ability to read hydraulic drawings is very beneficial;

Tests to determine fitness for purpose

  • Check draughting portfolio – body of work that can demonstrate what the person has done in the past and on their own (complexity and diversity of work)

Measuring

  • Measurement test with Vernier
  • Measurement test with – Inside & Outside micrometre

Dimensioning and tolerance knowledge testing

  • Give a seal type and size – must correctly specify groover width, shaft size etc.
  • Specify what is the best type bearing to use for application A and to select one from a catalogue

Solid works test and taking instruction test

  • Speed and accuracy of work test (Solid works) – 1 x basic laser cut drawing, 1 x basic shaft drawing and 1 x sheet metal part
  • Insert a BOM with template
  • Record and run SolidWorks macro

Knowledge test

  • Tolerance symbol
  • Welding symbol
  • Hydraulic component symbols
  • Planning test (give a complex project task – and get the person to break the task down and develop a plan for the completion of the task).
